As wind turbines have increased in size, and deployment has moved into offshore areas, where maintenance is highly troublesome and expensive, the need for a new paradigm within quality control of large casted metal parts has arisen.
For large casted metal parts it is a challenge to ensure that the quality of the entire part conforms to the calculated mechanical properties. This R&D track will focus on developing non-destructive testing methods based on e.g. ultrasound capable of quantifying the quality of the entire part drawing on experiences from quality control of weldings. Furthermore minimizing discrepancies between real-life and calculated mechanical properties of the large casted metal parts will also be part of this R&D track.
